Bittersweet...maybe

I'm very happy that Obama won.  Its wonderful, historic and a great opportunity to finally confront some of the major issues facing this country.

However, I'm more than a little upset that as of right now it looks like as of tomorrow I will officially be a second-class citizen in my home state of California.  Proposition 8 has over 50% of the vote right now....more like almost 56% of the vote the last time I checked.  I'm going to stop paying attention now and find out which way if finally ends up tomorrow.

For the record, one of the founding principles of this nation was the protection of the rights of the minority against the tyranny of the majority.  We are guaranteed equal protection under the law.  The idea that my basic civil rights and that fundametal guarantee of equal protection  were subject to a general election vote flies in the face of everything this country is supposed to stand for.  And if the worst happens and this state does amend its constitution to enshrine inequality, I only hope the people who have pushed this through stop and think for a minute about what they've done.  What can be done to one group can be done to another, and when you start singling out who is and who is not worthy of equal rights, you could easily be next in line.

With luck tomorrow morning this post will be irrelevant...but its not looking good.

How is it possible for Obama to win and Prop 8 to pass?

This country never fails to boggle.

Black and Latino voters tend to be for the ban, and ironically the fact that they turned out in huge numbers to elect Obama probably ensured that a conservative proposition passed.

But yeah, I don't get it either, really. I've never understood why people were so freaked out by the issue in the first place.

I hope the best for our country. He has a heavy load and a lot of expectations to fill. It won't be long and the mud-slinging Cindy Sheehan marching-through-the-streets butt naked offense the liberals enjoyed for 8 years won't amount to a dick squat if he doesn't bring
"change." I want intertest rates to spike and to quit importing foreign cars from Korea. This turkey better learn how to fly above the red tape he's promised to slice through and start holding hands across the aisle.

I wonder how much more security detail he has than any other president in history; your tax dollars at work people!! The people who voted him in should accrue extra taxes just for that.

I'm sorry for you guys, I really am. As a straight person I voted against it and I'm ashamed that so many people that share the air I breathe are such unenlightened animals. Still, it's not over till it's over, the Supreme Court has yet to weigh in on it, and eventually they'll have to. Fortunately the US Constitution isn't subject to mob rule and cannot be amended by a simple majority of the bleating masses. Obama's in power, which means more liberal justices, which means when the Supreme s eventually have to hand down a judgment things will perhaps be put right.

Ya, this was kinda of a bumper. This and the fact that Prop H didnt pass... which mean no mater what hope we have in the white house, bigotry and lobbyist still holds sway.

And here's a nice CNN map of California on Prop 8... god damn central valley... and LA was close, really?
